We have taken our dogs (often 2 or 3 at a time) to Allen's Kennels for the past 20 years. We have never had an issue until this Sunday when my daughter picked up the dogs on a Sunday evening. Apparently the process is to simply open the kennel and let the dogs run freely through the facility into the office. Somewhere in between their kennel and the office, one of my dogs had the entire bottom of his ear torn off. The staff claims that he got close to another kennel and the dog in that kennel bit his ear through the fencing. They attempted to tape it up and my daughter paid the bill and took them home. A girl named Jennifer called me the next day to advise me to go to our vet, and Allen's would pay the bill. She was very apologetic and concerned. I made an appointment and took him as soon as we arrived home. The product that the kennel staff taped him up with was stuck to his wound and was very painful coming off. Three people had to hold him down while two vets worked on getting the tape off. This was the first time we were able to see the extent of the injury. The entire bottom of the ear is gone and left with a bloody jagged edge. My husband called the owner, Dottie Allen, when we got back home and said that we should be reimbursed for the stay, and sent her a picture of what was left of the ear. She said she had seen the piece of the ear on the floor and accused us of being all about the money and not the care of the pet. He informed her that it is entirely about the safety of the pet, which is why we pay to keep them in a kennel when we go away. He also questioned the process of not leashing them on the way out past the other animals, and how a boxer could possibly bite a dog through the cyclone fencing. When she became hostile and defensive he hung up and called back and asked to speak to Jennifer, who had requested that we call the next day to see how the dog was doing. Dottie got on the phone again asked why we wanted to speak with Jennifer. She would not put her on the phone. After this experience I would never recommend this kennel and will not go back. When leaving pets in a kennel you have to trust that the staff is doing the right thing while you're away. When an owner of a company is this callous when a pet is injured it is an indication of the quality of the care. Do yourself a favor and take your pets to a place where their safety is the first priority!!!
