Tell the provider about escape behavior, handling difficulties, feeding needs and any history of conflict with dogs.

Training methods and suitable goals

Discuss the training approach in concrete terms. Which rewards, equipment and handling techniques would the trainer use for your dog? What happens when a dog is confused, worried or unable to perform an exercise? Ask for an example relevant to your goals rather than relying only on a label such as obedience training or canine behavior training. Explain your own preferences before making a commitment.

Owner involvement is an essential part of comparing these programs. Find out how the trainer will teach you to use the new skills, not simply demonstrate them at pickup. Ask whether other household members can attend handover lessons and whether you will practice with feedback. Discuss how the exercises transfer to your own walks, visitors and home routines, where distractions may differ from the training facility.

Finally, compare the plan for returning home. Ask what written instructions, follow-up sessions or messaging support are available and how you should report a problem. Clarify how progress is described and what you will need to reinforce through ongoing practice. The main potential advantage is structured practice with a professional dog trainer, alongside a consistent daily routine. The tradeoff is that much of the learning happens away from you and the home environment. A dog may become fluent with the trainer’s cues while still needing help responding to your timing, your front door and your walking route. Compare that transfer challenge with the time and support you can provide after the stay.

Dog owners should distinguish socialization from simply being around other dogs. A program may provide carefully managed exposure, but shared housing or play does not automatically improve confidence. Ask how your dog’s behavior is monitored during the whole stay, including resting and transitions between activities. For a reactive dog, appropriate separation may be more useful than mandatory group interaction.

A two-week board and train package describes duration, not a standard level of achievement. Shorter programs may target a narrow skill, while a longer program can still leave behavioral issues unresolved if the setting does not reproduce the relevant context. Before choosing any training option, agree what the dog has learned at the end of the program will mean in observable terms and how you will continue training at home.

Ask whether equipment such as an e-collar is proposed or included before booking, and discuss your preferences explicitly. A program should explain its methods without requiring you to accept an unfamiliar tool at pickup.
