I brought two of my dogs for onsite training after completing a home lesson. During the session on Monday, December 22, Ben focused almost entirely on one of my dogs to work on leash walking. He used a slip lead, twisting it tightly under my dog’s neck and up over his muzzle, and repeatedly pulled hard on it. At the time, I noticed fur being pulled out and a visible line left around his muzzle, which took a couple of days to fade. On Christmas Eve, we noticed seepage around his neck. By Christmas Day, there was a strong odor indicating infection. The following day, our veterinarian shaved under his chin and neck and found irritated, inflamed lines consistent with where the lead had been wrapped. My dog required antibiotics and antiseptic treatment. When later contacted about additional training services, I informed his assistant that my dog required a vet visit following the session. I did not receive any follow-up or acknowledgment. My recommendation is simple: trust your instincts. If a training method or trainer makes you uncomfortable, that trainer may not be the right fit for your family.
