Chuckanut Kelpies and Aussies

It is clear that Jan has knowledge and experience in herding, it is undeniable that she knows her stuff. The reason for the negative review is that there is clearly a gap in skill when it comes to teaching people. I went in for a herding lesson with my dog. It was our first time herding as total and complete novices. Jan opened our lesson by saying "you have absolutely no control over your dog" which instantly shook my confidence and made me feel like a total failure before we even had a chance to try. Her handling style was quite a bit more forceful than I was expecting. She took the leash from my hands without asking a couple of times (for demo purposes) and Whenever I made an error (which was many times) Jan would tell me how wrong I was and I felt like I was just getting correction after correction. I am generally a pretty soft person so that harsher approach was really difficult for me. At the end of the lesson, I tried to communicate this to Jan. She told me that if that's what I'm like then I have the wrong breed of dog. I don't feel like gentleness and softness are character flaws and was actually pretty insulted at that comment. It's completely fine that she has a different approach than I do, she's clearly very successful at what she does. It was just the complete wrong fit between personalities. It felt like I spent the entire lesson failing over and over again and receiving only belittling comments rather than real instruction.
