I enrolled my 4 1/2 month old puppy in the puppy obedience program because it is presented online as a positive reinforcement Program. The first day of class, 2 incidents occurred, one frightening, which proved that this was not the case. A very nervous puppy was barking incessantly. The trainer told the owner to grab the puppy’s collar by the back, pull hard, and at the same time push down on the dog’s muzzle. She remarked that he would not be able to bark and choke at the same time. When the dog later acted up again, she “settled” the dog (or tried to) by pushing it to the floor forcefully and rolling it on its side. The dog reacted ferociously, growling, snapping, and baring its teeth. Scary! The trainer was lucky not to have been seriously bitten. Of course, she was at fault, not the dog. I ran these two incidents by a friend who is a certified dog trainer. She was appalled. I will not go back.
