Food is typically one of the most efficient reinforcers. For dogs, food is considered an unconditioned reinforcer. Simple, you do not have to teach the dog to want it or like it. Because you are paying good money for our time, we use food to make sure the process moves as efficiently as possible. Once we start working, we will guide you through the process of identifying other forms of reinforcements that we can utilize as well. Anything that dog is trying to acquire – a Beagle getting to a scent, a Lab wanting the ball, or a Doodle desperately trying to get attention – is your currency. These things can and will also be used as rewards in exchange for a desired behavior. It is rare but there are some dogs who like food but won’t work for it. Most of the time there is a reason, like stress. We can help sort that out.

Text us for immediate needs including emergencies, last minute cancellations, or behavior emergencies like bites. We may not be able to answer immediately if we are in a session but will text you back as soon as I can. Scheduling appointments and sending training updates should be done via email as they are collected and organized per client. Emails are checked twice a day and are answered as quickly as possible, typically within 48-72 hours. Messages that are sent via Facebook sometimes get missed depending on our activity. You will get an automated response with instructions directing you back to our site. Call? Sure we do technically know how to use the phone. Consulting and training sessions take place at The Clinic - located in Barrington, Rhode Island. We have two consult rooms that are set up like actual living rooms to provide you and your dog as much comfort as possible. We also have a Cooperative Care space set up as a veterinary exam room to help dogs with any fear surrounding the vet. The Clinic also has a fully fenced yard. Sensory garden and outdoor enrichment elements, including dog-friendly plants and a dig box coming soon!

It depends. Behavior is complex and each dog is a unique individual. We usually have a better sense of timelines once the Complete Consult is done. Often times we will plan for 12 weeks of sessions as a baseline. But even then, we try to focus more on positive outcomes and continual progress over time.

At the first session, our team will conduct a Complete Consult, which is a 90-minute consultation to collect a behavior history and an in-depth discussion of the issues, functional assessment, prognosis, and how best to move forward. After the initial consult is complete, we can begin with typical 60-minute work sessions at a pace that works for the family.
