Questions & answers

From Google

What people have asked about this business.

My dog is five years old, is he too old to start training?

A five-year-old dog is certainly not too old for training. We generally recommend training for dogs up to about seven years old. However, for dogs nearing the end of their average lifespan (around 13 years), we might advise against extensive training as the return on investment would be limited. For most adult dogs, including those at 5 years old, training can still be highly beneficial and effective in improving behavior and strengthening the bond between dog and owner.

Question on Google
My dog is aggressive, but I don't want to waste money if the training isn't going to work. How do we know it will work?

The success of the training largely depends on the owner's commitment. For behavioral issues, it's crucial that you're willing to set boundaries, provide consequences, and maintain consistency. If you're unable to enforce rules or follow through with the training, it may not be effective. Our approach focuses on teaching dogs rules and boundaries, then consistently enforcing them. Progress is achievable with most dogs, but long-term success relies on the owner's dedication to maintaining the training principles.

Question on Google
We only have one thing we are concerned about. Can we get help with that one item?

Our training approach is comprehensive rather than focused on isolated issues. We believe that behavioral problems are often interconnected and stem from broader training gaps. Our program aims to establish clear rules and boundaries, teaching owners how to consistently enforce these guidelines. This holistic approach addresses the root causes of problematic behaviors, leading to overall improvement in the dog's conduct and the owner-dog relationship.

Question on Google
If my dog goes through training, don't I need training as well?

Indeed, you do. We often say that 70% of the training is for the human, while 30% is for the dog. Dogs typically learn commands quickly, but it's the owner's responsibility to maintain consistency and accountability. Our programs include one-on-one sessions with you, along with follow-up emails containing video demonstrations of what to practice at home. For certain programs, we also conduct home visits after the dog's training to ensure you're applying what was learned in the home environment.

Question on Google
Are you a positive only training facility, or balanced training facility?

We employ a balanced training approach, which means we use both positive reinforcement for desired behaviors and consequences for unwanted behaviors. This method is particularly effective for addressing behavioral issues such as reactivity, aggression, excessive barking, or leash pulling. While positive reinforcement is excellent for teaching new commands, we've found that incorporating consequences for undesirable behaviors leads to more comprehensive and lasting results, especially in situations where treats alone are ineffective in managing a dog's impulsive behaviors.

Question on Google
We have already spent money on training, and weren't happy with the results. Is it a waste of money to go through your training program?

It's not uncommon for clients to come to us after unsatisfactory experiences with other trainers. Our approach differs in that we focus on achieving high standards of obedience and behavior modification. For instance, we train dogs not just to respond to commands, but to maintain the commanded position until released, even with distractions present. Our program has consistently shown improvements for dogs previously trained elsewhere. We set high expectations and work towards significant behavioral changes that make a real difference in the dog-owner relationship.

Question on Google
Do you guarantee the training will work?

We don't offer guarantees, as the long-term effectiveness of training depends significantly on the owner's consistency in maintaining the learned behaviors. However, we have a track record of making progress with every dog we've worked with. The training program establishes a foundation, but it's the owner's responsibility to reinforce and uphold the training consistently. Dogs learn at different rates, and their behavior can regress if owners don't maintain the established rules and boundaries.

Question on Google
Do you use prong collars; they must hurt the dog?

We do use prong collars in our training, but contrary to their appearance, they don't cause pain when used correctly. We employ them as a communication tool for all dogs, regardless of size or temperament. The prong collar allows us to use the pressure on and off concept, where the dog learns to respond to the tightening of the collar by returning to the desired position. This method is effective for teaching leash manners without putting pressure on the dog's trachea. While corrections are sometimes necessary, the primary purpose is to enhance communication between dog and handler.

Question on Google
Do you require the use of an e-collar in training?

Yes, we do incorporate e-collars in our training. We view the e-collar as a communication tool that allows us to convey a wide range of information to the dog, including positive feedback and corrections when necessary. Our approach uses the concept of pressure on and off, teaching dogs to respond to light sensations. This method is particularly effective for achieving reliable off-leash obedience, regardless of the dog's size or temperament. Our goal is to provide our clients with the tools to have full control over their dogs in various environments.

Question on Google
What should I expect coming through your program?

Our program aims for substantial improvement in both obedience and behavior. We use a scoring system based on a questionnaire filled out by owners before and after training. On average, dogs start with a score of 40 and finish with a score of 78, indicating significant progress in obedience and reduction of problematic behaviors. While perfection isn't guaranteed, this level of improvement typically results in a markedly better relationship between dogs and their owners. The key to success lies in the owner's commitment to consistently applying the training principles learned.

We had a challenging case for Elevate Canine Academy with our rescued pitbull mix Maggie. She's great with our family but shows aggression towards other dogs, strangers, and was a "puller" on walks. Clay was her primary trainer and he did a wonderful job!! By the end, Maggie even flopped in front of him for belly rubs, something I wouldn't have imagined possible beforehand! She learned how to walk without pulling, become more used to other people/pets without having a barking fit, and to follow commands such as sit or laydown. The staff also taught us how to continue the training exercises at home and I'm happy to say we've seen a huge improvement in Maggie! I highly recommend Elevate Canine Academy to anyone who needs help with their dogs behavior!

My dog Hazel and I have had an excellent experience with Elevate Canine Academy! Hazel just completed the 2 week obedience day training program and is starting her 1 week add on of advanced obedience training. The trainers are very knowledgeable and provide feedback after every session! Hazel started out timid, shy, and reactive to strangers. We are now able to walk past strangers in my apartment hallway and go into stores with minimal reactions from her. Hazel and I are both more confident, which has strengthened our bond. I will definitely be signing her up for a refresher course this winter 😊

My dog and I learned so much. After the two week training, there is more peace in the house, a well trained dog and a much better behaved dog.

We had a great experience with the two week day training. The staff are friendly and took the time to explain what they did and why, as well as answer any and all questions. Our high energy, high drive puppy got the structure she needed to learn how to regulate her emotions and obey commands even in distracting environments. She was always excited to get dropped off!

I know what you’re thinking…why are there no bad reviews aside from the person who doesn't like the use of prong and e-collars and felt they needed to share that. That was my question when I was deciding where to bring my 2 Olde English Bulldogs for reactivity and aggression training help but after they both completed the program today, I can confidently say there are no bad reviews because these guys know what they’re doing. I have 2 Olde English Bulldogs and they attended the day training program at Elevate and it was worth every cent! The first thing I want to talk about is the prong and e-collars. Myself and many others think both of those tools are cruel punishment, however, when you have a 70lb dog that you have to keep under control sometimes you have to do the hard thing. Rewards don’t always work with dogs that are anxious, reactive or aggressive and after being trained myself on the use of these 2 tools I fully support them. I tested the prong collar around my neck and popped it like you’re directed to do in training when you want your dog to focus and obey and it’s uncomfortable but not painful, more annoying than anything. The e-collar can cause pain if you crank up the levels so if you bring your dog to this training take advantage of the trainer’s knowledge on the proper use of e-collars during your hour long human training session. Make sure you watch the videos they send you each night too. I also tested the e-collar on myself up to 28 (the highest used on my dog) and it feels like I got shocked by static electricity, just a weird feeling but not painful. More startling if anything and that’s why they are effective for marking a behavior and communicating what you want your dog to do. Dogs are more sensitive though according to what I learned so make sure you ask tons of questions on the proper use for your dog. My dogs are so anxious and would never get in the car but on the 2nd day of training they were so excited and jumped right in to go to “work” which is what I called it. That right there told me all I needed to know about the people at Elevate Canine. The trainers take the dogs for walks, introduce them to strange things (walking past a running lawns mower, traffic, other people, vacuuming, etc.) and eventually they get to go on a little adventure to a store to show off their skills in public. (Btw, Clay, if you see this, you have to send me that picture of Leo in the chair at Scheels!!) The dogs will work on basic commands and ultimately lead up to commands that you probably won’t even believe your dog could do, like staying in a down (just laying down until you give the release command), outside, with people and other dogs around, while you drop the leash for whatever reason. Walking my dogs has never been easier, they aren’t constantly barking at every person or animal that walks past the house and are overall just more mature. Their confidence was definitely built at Elevate and I will continue to work with them so they are completely confident in me! If you made it this far, I’ll just leave you with the thought that even if the price seems ridiculous to you or you are at your wits end and just don’t believe training will work, it will, I promise. It’s 100% worth it but you have to continue working on it and enforcing it at home or the dog will just revert back to bad habits. If you’re feeling hopeless just remember, there are people here to help and Elevate is a fantastic option! You don’t have to rehome or surrender your dog to a shelter due to bad behaviors, just ask for help!
