How do I introduce my dog to baby?
Gradually, Family Paws encourages a homecoming that is gradual instead of a physical introduction. Family Paws encourages dogs and newborns are separated using gates, play yards, crates etc. Dogs do NOT need to be physically close to become familiar with newborns. Relationships take time and there is no need for physical contact of a newborn and dog. http://www.FamilyPaws.com

Should we bring home the blanket for our dog to sniff?
Here is a video to offer some food for thought. Dog and baby need time and space to allow a familiarity bond to grow gradually and with safety being the priority. We believe scent is an important factor but it is over time combined with other positive exercises vs a one time blanket exposure.

It is advised that while having a dog around a baby that you use a barrier of some type like a play yard, open or gate to prevent your dog from initially getting too close and personal. Keep in mind that dogs are inquisitive and like to sniff and lick. WE DO NOT SUGGEST ALLOWING YOUR DOG IS THAT CLOSE TO A NEWBORN. Great question! The key to this is to begin as soon as you find out you are expecting so that you can take your time and make gradual changes. I highly recommend taking a Dogs and Storks class through Familypaws.com as this webinar goes into detail about preparation and what is most important.

The one thing that stayed consistent is that every single time i needed help/advice/support - I knew I could reach out to Jen and she will always be there for us. we had so many ups and downs, and it's been amazing to share them all with Jen. I can't speak enough about how helpful her advice is and how comforting it is to have someone to listen and support when things go sideways.
I know we will always have an anxious, grumpy pup who will take us on an emotional rollercoaster, but we always know we have Jen to support us and give us advice.

Her commitment to your success is palpable in every interaction, and she does such a lovely job of putting families at ease in sometimes very challenging situations. The Family Paws program is an absolute fount of knowledge and resources to help families with dogs and babies/toddlers create a safe and successful home. You can't help but walk away learning something new or approaching a challenge in a different way. The FP phrases are also a great way to remember many of the concepts presented. My favorite is, "babies grow, dogs age... Adjust at every stage!"
