Max, our cocker spaniel, is a high energy 2 year old! We had gone through basic puppy training and he understood commands but we and he needed more guidance to channel his energy and improve his behavior. Johanna did just that! She is very knowledgeable and takes great care to understand you and your dog’s needs then develop a program to meet those needs. We had several online sessions and she helped us to understand his and our behavior. Max is much better behaved and we interact with him at a much higher level. Johanna has given us the tools to improve our experiences with Max. He also likes to pull on the leash when walking and we plan on working with Johanna again this summer. Vega and I did the 10 class individualized training with Johanna, and it was amazing. She helped me understand how Vega thinks and interprets my communications-both voice and body-so I can communicate more effectively with her. I also loved that we could do classes both in person and via zoom, which was perfect because we were out of state for 2 months this summer. So the classes could continue. My experience with Four Legged Scholars far exceeded my expectations. I had the opportunity to work with Johanna both in person and virtually through Zoom, and the results have been incredible. At first, I was very hesitant about virtual dog training, but after giving it a try, I was hooked. Johanna has such a wealth of knowledge about improving behavior, leash skills, and reinforcing positive habits—it was hard to remember everything at the moment. With Zoom, though, I could set up my phone or laptop, so Johanna could clearly see me and my dog, whether we were inside or outside. She would observe, guide me step by step, and correct my technique in real time. Even better, Johanna recorded our sessions, so I could rewatch them anytime to refresh my memory and catch the finer details. She also provided excellent notes, which made practice even easier. Now that my training is complete, I can still review the videos if needed. Before working with Johanna, walking Bruno was nearly impossible—he would pull so hard it felt like he and I might take flight. Now, he walks calmly on a loose leash most of the time, and if he regresses after a break, I have the tools to get him back on track. Bruno also used to leap at windows and bark whenever someone passed by, or unravel completely at the sight of birds, trucks, or other dogs. Thanks to Johanna’s strategies, he now responds to the “leave it” command, which has made a world of difference. I can’t recommend Johanna and Four Legged Scholars highly enough. Taking the leap of faith into training has transformed both my dog’s behavior and our overall happiness.

I have a high energy golden retriever that pulled hard on walks and was overexcited when people came to the door. I had tried different training programs over the years, but they didn’t work and I soon gave up. After retiring, I decided to try again and came across Johanna at Four Legged Scholars. She took the time to hear my concerns and evaluate our situation. We signed up for in home lessons. Johanna spent time helping me understand the importance of positive reinforcement and consistency. Every interaction (walk or greeting) was a training opportunity. The difference is amazing. Dog walks are now with a loose leash and he is calm when people come to the door.
