Island Dog Obedience

We adopted Biggie from the humane society who was found in a shoe box and only a couple of days old. When she started teething she became very unruly and started to jump on us all the time. She also was a tornado on a leash. Not to mention shes only 6 months at 57 pounds and not done growing. I was having a very hard time managing her. We are so completely grateful for island dog obedience with trainers Maria and Chantelle. The 2 week boarding was absolutely the best thing for her. Biggie’s transformation is amazing. No more jumping and going for walks is fun. Once again thank you. We love love love our BIGGIE. 💙

I LOVE IDO! They assisted training my two dogs (Bernedoodle and Labradoodle) and both came home from their 2-week board and train like brand new dogs. They had manners and were listening in a way they never had before. Kristi was an amazing trainer who was very kind and patient to our dogs, who each had individual issues (anxiety, stubbornness, etc.) and she treated each dog as her own. I would recommend IDO and Kristi a million times over!

We’re extremely happy with the two week board and train. Maria and staff gave us daily detailed and thoughtful updates with our dog’s progress. Our dog had a great time and learned so much. We came back from vacation and was blown away with the progress. Maria showed us how to continue training, and has been in touch ever since. Our dog had 95% improvement on all commands and we feel confident that we can reach 100% with the tools that island dog obedience provided. The following review details our experience with Trainer Chantelle via 1:1 dog training lessons. In Dec 2021, we adopted Archie, a 1-year-old Whippet Mix, from the Humane Society. As sweet and friendly as he was, Archie immediately exhibited a number of behaviors that put himself and others in danger: eating and destroying foreign objects, jumping on adults and children, and roughhousing with other dogs. And despite our best efforts he even managed to escape his leash and find his way onto the street (darting towards oncoming traffic). After a month of supporting Archie's transition to our home, we knew we needed expert help. Within moments of submitting an online request for support, Chantelle reached out and took the time to understand Archie's needs. We observed her approach as firm but centered in the dog's happiness and health. Minutes into our conversation, it became immediately clear she would be able to teach us how to best provide the ideal environment for Archie. During our consultation, Chantelle explained the usage of an electric collar as a training tool in combination with positive reinforcement. Naturally, we were at first hesitant but after having tried the tool on ourselves first, we saw how it served as an effective method to provide a consistent form of communication to Archie and a necessary tool to keep him out of serious danger. There is so much to thank Chantelle for: her teaching approach, which included modeling the techniques and working with us to apply them; her willingness to answer our questions even if they fell outside our lessons' primary focus; and the extra time she took to ensure we knew how to do our homework before our next lesson. The most unexpected surprise was the effort she made to simulate everyday environments that triggered Archie the most. We held lessons at the park and the mall, sometimes with other dogs to serve as distractions. 4 lessons and 3 months of ongoing training later, Archie has fully integrated himself into our neighborhood's community of dogs. He can sit, stay down, and come on command. He can play nicely. And perhaps most importantly, he can enjoy our trips to the parks without a leash. We never thought we would be able to get Archie to this point and are beyond proud of him for doing so. We are eternally grateful for the knowledge that Chantelle imparted to us and Archie.
