Do you use negative reinforcement in your training practices? Also do you provide introduction to agility training?

Hi Cheryl! Great question. We’re what’s considered balanced trainers, which means we pull from a variety of training styles to find what works best for each individual dog — without ever using fear, intimidation, or dominating methods. Our goal is for training to be as positive and fun as possible, using things like treats, praise, and play to build trust, confidence, and reliability. That said, we also understand that not all dogs learn the same way. Some dogs may benefit from additional tools, such as training collars — but we are extremely selective about what brands and types we use, and we never put them on every dog. We don’t sell these tools, so if we ever recommend one, it’s because it can help the dog, not because of any profit motive. You’re involved in every step of your dog’s training. We’ll always talk through options with you beforehand, and you’ll see exactly how we work with your dog firsthand. Our approach is rooted in partnership, transparency, and customizing the training to what’s best for your dog — not what fits into a cookie-cutter method. As for agility — while we don’t have a full agility course on site, we can introduce your dog to confidence-building activities and agility-style foundations that are great for focus, energy, and enrichment. Do you do in home training for adult dogs with aggression towards the doorbell and front door?

Hi Bill! Great question — we actually don’t offer in-home training, and here’s why: We’ve found that dogs make faster and more lasting progress when they’re removed from the environment where the problem behavior started. In-home issues like aggression at the door or toward the doorbell are often tied to territorial habits, overstimulation, or lack of impulse control — and those patterns are hard to change when the dog is still surrounded by the same triggers and routines. By training at our controlled facility, we can reset those habits, build impulse control, and teach your dog to listen and regulate themselves in a neutral, distraction-free space. Once that foundation is strong, we layer in real-life distractions (including door-related setups) to help the behavior transfer back to home — but without trying to correct the issue in the heat of the moment. It’s a safer, more effective, and more reliable way to create long-term change! Let us know if you’d like more details — we’d love to help.

Kristen was an amazing help with our dog Rebel. When we went to her, he was anxious leaving my girlfriend in the house when I would take him out, now he enjoys our walks, playing with the ball and more. The improvement in his and my relationship has been a dramatic help to our lives. I'm so thankful for your help and guidance to ensure that he looks to me when he's unsure in a situation with other dogs around so that I can confidently guide him through uncertain waters. You truly are a great trainer and we all appreciate you for your help. We look forward to bringing Rogue back so that he can improve as well!

Kristen is absolutely amazing. She is so personable and very knowledgeable. I took my Aussie to her as a puppy and will be coming back for a some extra training as we have some big life changes coming soon. I also brought my senior dog, Rebel, to Kristen for help because he was showing some separation anxiety and not transitioning well with us moving in with my boyfriend since he has only ever lived with me. After our 8 week course, Rebel and my boyfriend have built trust through the training, we understand how to communicate with Rebel better than ever and have a more consistent schedule and routine thanks to Kristen. We will be coming back with both dogs for training help with 2 dogs at 1 time. Thank you so much!!!

We loved working with Ashlee at Kurtz K9s. We came in already having some basics and she adapted quickly to where we were, specific goals we had for our big guy, and gently helped us unlearn some poor technique we had as owners. Highly recommend!!

We rescued a bonded pair of Dachshunds, Gracie Lu (5) and Harley (10) They were barkers, jumpers, diggers, leash pullers, nippers and escape artists. We could see why they had twice been returned to the shelter. In spite of the challenges, they presented, we were in love with their cuteness. Sometimes, however, love is not enough; we needed help in getting some control of their behaviors. We chose Kurtz k9 and scheduled the meet and greet with Ashlee. She impressed us with her depth of knowledge about our breed and her honesty as to what we could expect during and after training. We were not disappointed. Ashlee is an excellent teacher. Essentially, she taught me how to train our dogs. Ashlee helped us in other, unexpected, ways. She noticed Gracie Lu’s triggered responses that suggested pain. Our Veterinarian didn’t disagree and prescribed appropriate meds. Toys, halters, leashes, muzzles— Ashlee suggested the best and most appropriate kinds for our pups. In every way, we found Ashlee to be patient, kind, and supportive, She tailored our lessons to Gracie Lu's and Harley’s needs. I graduated along with them them as I have the tools to make their training a way of life. “Distract, Mark and Treat.” Thank you, Ashlee!
