New England Dogsledding

My husband and I were traveling the New England area for our honeymoon during Christmas week. Although we were staying in a bed and breakfast in Vermont, we decided to travel 2.5 hours to Main just to go dogsledding one day with New England Dogsledding. I looked at other companies near us while planning our honeymoon but this company stood out the most. Steve was full of information and completely honest with me. He suggested companies near the bed and breakfast so we wouldn't have to travel far. The fact Steve was willing to boost other companies and not just stear me toward him was impressive. Furthermore, New England Dogsledding did not disappoint us. Steve was great at answering my text messages, answering my voicemails quickly, and answering my numerous questions on how to get to his location. We did the 2 hour segment which includes meeting the dogs, learning how to connect them to the sleigh, and managing the sleigh ourselves so we can mush! Steve surprised us while unloading the dogs because my husband and I expected to see Siberian Huskies and malinois. However, he used Alaskan Huskies which was a total shock because how tiny they are! Do not let the size fool you, though, because those dogs are mighty and love/need to run. To cap this long review, the experience was thrilling and exciting. I'm glad I could learn something new and check off an activity from my bucket list. New England Dogsledding is definitely the place to go if you are an avid dog lover.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a 25 mile dogsledding experience with Steve’s New England Dogsledding team. Since dogsledding in Norway several years ago, we had been looking forward to doing it again. We had an extraordinary time: exhilarating sled run, dynamic dogs, and Steve’s careful control of the team. He and his assistant Zack explained every step in the preparation of the sleds and the dogs, educating us about the entire process. Even as we flew through the air on the run, he kept up a running monlogue on the area, noting moose tracks, identifying the birds that got the dogs’ attention, and pointing out botanical beauties like the yellow birches. The weather was perfect: cold and sunny, and the dogs seemed thrilled to have the chance to run. It is clear that these dogs are well cared for: they are in superb physical condition, and their sweet temperaments indicate that they are well loved. We appreciated Steve’s concern for them as he tried to balance our inexperience with their welfare. In other words: we had a lot to learn in a short amount of time, and Steve was patient. After all, the welfare of 22 dogs depended on our not messing up the whole intricate process. We drove five hours for this experience, and look forward to doing it again. There are other dog sled opportunities out there, but we were gratified to find one in which the dogs are the top priority. Worth every minute getting there, and every penny. My wife and I did the Learn To Mush 2-day package. Dogsledding: The first day we both went out with a guide and a 12-dog team. One of us stood on the back of the sled with the guide and the other was in the sled. We learned commands, how to maneuver the sled, how to kick, etc. It is a bit crowded on the back with two people, but there's no other way to learn. We switched places a few times and then later the guide got into the sled and let both of us drive the sled together. The second day we were able to take out an 8-dog team ourselves. It was a bit nerve-racking at first but these dogs are pros and after a few minutes it felt great. I learned a lot about how to drive a sled and will definitely be doing this again someday! Lodging: The Inn is small but very nice. It's more like staying in somebody's vacation house than it is a hotel. Everything was very well-maintained and clean. The food is nothing fancy, but very good. Around the Inn are the dog houses (we called this area DogVille), horse and llama stables, and an area for the older dogs and puppies. The whole Inn was really great, and there plenty of cats and dogs to pet while you are there.
