I recently adopted a rescue dog (Cooper, a small terrier mix) that had been returned three times for biting and aggressive behavior. I quickly learned I was in over my head. I could hardly get a leash on him, and he was constantly being aggressive with my other small dog. My vet recommended Practical Obedience and I cannot say enough good things!! Another trainer I looked into was going to use a prong and shock collar to train Cooper, and I didn’t feel good about that. Connie and Maggie at Practical Obedience quickly showed me I made the right choice by going with their positive reinforcement only method! They helped me understand that Cooper’s aggression was coming from fear and anxiety, and showed me how to mitigate his daily stress. Cooper has learned so many new things and is a now a VERY HAPPY dog, mostly because they taught me how to understand him and interact with him. I went from being stressed and afraid around him to loving him to pieces. Their methods are easy to understand, and I feel like I can apply the methods to new things easily now that I have learned the process. My understanding of dog behavior has improved enough that I even find myself telling other people what “my trainer” would say about their dog issues. In addition to training in person, after the lesson Maggie emails out a summary of what you did that day with handouts, and videos or links, for more reading about the concepts. She is also responsive via email if you have an emergency between lessons. The price for all that Practical Obedience provides is a bargain! Cooper, Bill, and I are so grateful that Practical Obedience helped us become a happy family! We are still working on things, but I am proud of all Cooper’s progress every day! I can’t recommend Practical Obedience enough!!
