RETIRED: PAWSitive Approach L.L.C. Dog Training

I have a very energetic, loving golden retriever who turned 1 when Kathy first started working with us. He made having house guests down right miserable because he would incessantly jump, bark and chew on their belongings or their arms. He had zero impulse control to say the least. I was at my wits end, but she immediately showed us some techniques that changed his behavior on the first session. Kathy has made our life with my puppy so much more enjoyable!

I contacted Kathy after trying several methods to train and work with my young german shepherd/lab mix. He's young, and barks happily at the squirrels in our yard, and sometimes at the neighbors. The methods suggested to us to deter nuisance barking usually involved punishment via an electronic collar or sonic deterrent. We also did a group obedience training class, which was very beneficial, but needed some one on one time in our home to go further with his training. Our dog is a rescue, and he has some fear based anxiety. Our feeling was that using punishment would only lead to more fear, and less trust in us. When I read about Kathy's positive approach training, I thought it would be the right fit, and it has been terrific! We did an initial consultation, and signed up for a five session package. The books she recommended, the halter we are now using, and the training exercises have all led to a truly deep bond between our dog and ourselves. We have learned to better understand our boy and what he is trying to tell us, and he understands us more clearly, too. He is responsive to us now, doing what we ask of him, and is learning what is acceptable/unacceptable behavior. We have learned how to give him the freedom to make desired choices, and how to communicate to him without frustration when he makes undesired choices. Kathy has given us the tools, but it is up to us to do the work. Our dog loves the training, and it hardly feels like work. Kathy will not come by and do a few things and leave you with a magically changed dog. She will give you the confidence to get to know your dog and strengthen that bond, and you'll be able to truly communicate and teach him/her what he/she needs to learn. Many people have been skeptical about not using punishment or yelling, but I know that this is the best way to really bond with my dog, and our lives are richer for having Kathy and her teaching in them!
