Our golden retriever Sophie (15 months old) recently completed four weeks in Rising Starr K9’s Board and Train program. The results were truly phenomenal. In four weeks Sophie was transformed from an occasionally naughty, “I’ll do it when I feel like it” dog into a model of obedience and behavior. Rick and Joane accept one dog at a time into this program, hosting your dog in their home and providing continuous training. Sophie progressed rapidly, and was introduced to a variety of environments—group training classes, visits to hospitals and clinics, strolls through stores, and a variety of challenging settings. Throughout the process Rick sent us photos, videos and written updates on Sophie’s progress. Seriously—EVERY DAY we received multiple updates. Frankly, we didn’t think she had it in her, but at the end of the time with Rising Starr K9, Sophie emerged a model dog. She was evaluated and passed three levels of AKC certification: Canine Good Citizen, Community Good Citizen, and Urban Good Citizen. She is now happily responsive to our commands and, perhaps of greater importance, is now fully settled in her demeanor and reaction to potential stressors. It’s been a truly miraculous transformation. I do not exaggerate when I say that Rick is truly among the country’s elite dog trainers. It’s shown in his calm demeanor and his ability to establish rapport with dogs. In thirty-plus years of dog ownership (and prior to that working with military working dogs) I’ve encountered a number of trainers and he stands head and shoulders above the crowd. I’d also note that RSK9 also offers classroom training from Puppy School and up. The results they achieve are also equally impressive. Best of all, they follow up with their pupils (owners and dogs), with numerous events and refreshers throughout the year. They are truly dedicated to those who choose their services. If by chance they have an opening in their canine Finishing School (boarding and training in their home) or to participate in any of their classes, you would be well advised to jump on the opportunity. We are eternally grateful to Rising Starr K9. If you have the chance to work with Rick and Joane, count yourself among the fortunate. UPDATE: As Sophie approaches three years of age, our investment in training with RSK9 has proven its worth repeatedly. We recently returned from a short trip to the Baraboo/Wisconsin Dells area, where Sophie accompanied us everywhere. She was perfect, and everywhere we went strangers complimented us on her excellent behavior. Thanks, Rick and Joane…we could not have done this without you!
