Maggie is a seven year old rescue dog who recently lost her housemate to illness. Since she never had formal obedience training, I took her to Brett at Rude Dog K9 Training Company to boost her confidence as the only dog in the household. I also wanted to prepare her for future, international air travel inside a pet carry-on bag. Plus, I had concerns that Maggie wouldn’t fit in the bag because she was overweight. Prior to taking Maggie to Rude Dog, I researched several dog trainers in the area, but was disappointed that they were initially more interested in providing information about their fees, and not speaking personally with me about specific needs for Maggie. The difference with Brett at Rude Dog K9 Training Company was that he invited me first to bring Maggie for a one-hour evaluation with him. Upon arrival at his place of business, I was pleased to see that it is a real training facility, including professional tools and equipment. During the evaluation, Brett had a form/checklist that he used to take an assessment of Maggie by asking me a series of questions. He also observed Maggie in the room (together with his dogs) during the evaluation. On-leash, I was able to demonstrate to Brett what Maggie already knew how to do. Then, he took over the leash to test how she would respond to him. I had a lot of questions about dog training methods too, and Brett answered them all. Brett was very interested to understand our specific needs, and proposed a personalized training program that was tailored specifically for Maggie. It was at the end of the evaluation session that Brett provided several package options with pricing. My needs were slightly different for the five-day Master Program I selected, and it was no problem for Brett to make a modification. During Maggie‘s training she learned leash walking, obedience, agility and how to enter an airline carry-on bag for pets. Brett is also a dog nutritionist and provided feeding guidelines for Maggie; plus he showed me the treadmill that would be part of her training for strength and weight loss. During the five-day training, Brett sent video/photo text messages to me, so I could follow her progress. Following the final five-day training program, Brett held an instructional session with me. We discussed Maggie‘s successes and challenges. Then he proceeded to teach me the fundamental skills he had imprinted upon her, so we could continue with them at home. He also explained best practices for airport navigation, and in-cabin air travel with dogs. In the two weeks since Maggie‘s training, life with her has been fun and games! We practice daily with long walks (controlled – without incident with other people/animals), voice commands, hand signals, airline carry-on bag comfort, and even a makeshift agility set-up around the house. She has also lost two pounds since our initial evaluation. Another nice thing is that Maggie’s Master Program came with two follow-up training sessions that I can set up with Brett at my convenience. This will be great to get extra help in the future to refine skills that Maggie may have trouble with; or even to learn new skills. Overall, our experience with Brett at Rude Dog K9 Training Company was excellent. Because of this training, Maggie will be confident in flying to Europe, walking nicely on cobblestone streets, and enjoying outdoor cafés on the Rhine River.
