Questions & answers
From GoogleWhat people have asked about this business.
Do you do in home training?
While all the training we provide is meant to be applicable in your home or any other environment, the majority of our training appointments take place at one of our two training facilities in Austin.

Do you have any breed restrictions?

Do you offer Board & Train options?
After offering Board & Train programs for many years, we discontinued those programs in lieu of more owner-involved options. We found that dogs and their humans saw greater long-term success when they trained together, rather than having the dog train on their own and making the owner play catch-up. Our Day Camp program is an excellent alternative to a Board & Train because while our trainers still get plenty of time to work with your pup, you get your dog back at the end of each day and can begin implementing your dog's new training in your home right from the start. This will help to avoid confusion for your dog and allow you an amazing bonding experience of learning together alongside your pup.

What guarantees do you offer regarding my dog being trained?
A guarantee of completion or success is impossible to provide when we are talking about living, thinking creatures. Your dog is not a robot, they have their own unique personality along with a life full of their own, personal experiences, as do you - their human! With that being said, what we can guarantee is that we will provide you with the tools, education, and support needed to ensure your dog can be successful in training. How long it takes will depend on several factors such as how consistent you are, what type of program you sign up for, etc, but we also promise to be there every step of the way with guidance and confidence that you'll be happy with your progress and results!

What is the consultation and do I have to schedule one?
The consultation is a free appointment to meet with one of our trainers and learn about what we have to offer. While not strictly necessary in most cases, it is highly recommended to schedule one so we can explain the details of how our training will work for your pup. It will also give you an opportunity to see our facility, learn about our Sit Means Sit training philosophy, and work with a trainer to put together a program designed around your specific goals. We want to make sure we're the perfect fit for your dog before you commit to anything.

What is the sit means sit e-collar?
The Sit Means Sit collar is a micro stim modality that is very similar to the micro stim units used in the medical and athletic fields. These micro stim units essentially use low-level, adjustable electronic stimulation to create a muscle contraction. In the medical field, they are used as aids to help alleviate pain, promote blood circulation and induce healing. For our SMS collar, an adjustable micro stim signal is manually sent from a remote, which translates into a “tap” delivered to the Sit Means Sit Collar. This tap starts at such a low level that it is often imperceptive to people. This signal from the Sit Means Sit collar is also adjustable in the same way that your voice is, and is completely controlled by you, the handler.

What type of training methods do you use?
The unique Sit Means Sit training model uses Attention-Based Training to modify behaviors and teach dogs new skills and proper manners. This approach to training allows our Sit Means Sit Austin trainers to use a variety of attention-based modalities such as leashes, flat collars, food, toys, and our patented Sit Means Sit Collar.

How much y'all charge
Our training programs vary considerably from dog to dog and depending on your training goals and your lifestyle. They vary both in the structure and layout of our programs, as well as in the cost and duration of the training. Each of our training programs is custom-tailored to your specific needs. To build you the right training package, we evaluate factors such as your dog’s age, temperament, previous training, your lifestyle, as well as your desired goals. What will work for one dog and owner won’t necessarily fit well with another. Because of these factors, we offer a free consultation as an opportunity to meet with your family and your dog to gain insight into the unique circumstances that affect your dog’s training.

It varies depending on the service, you can do board and trains, day trains, private sessions, or package deals for a year at a time with unlimited weekly and biweekly group sessions in that year. Been taking my pup for a few months, worth the money.

We found our dog tied to a fence a few years ago and he was reactive, not trusting and super high energy. He is also my wife's first dog and after doggie captured his first squirrel, it started to feel a little overwhelming for her (plus it didn't help that I didn't have any great answers at the time ---other than to wait). So, we turned to SmS (mainly Lamar) for help and after over a year with them, it's clear we put our faith in the right place. The dog-only intensives enabled our dog to make some progress but the big pay off was when we started going to the group classes regularly. Learning (i.e. being trained) in how to train/interact with our dog is life-changing and he's gradually evolved into a much calmer dog that makes more eye-contact than any dog I've ever had. It's incredible! Thank you SmS!!!
Ashley was amazing to work with! Our dog is reactive towards other dogs so she brought her own dog to our apartment to use in training. She gave a lot of helpful tips for managing our dog’s behavior within our home environment. She was also communicative and timely for our appointments. We highly recommend Ashley and SMS for any dog training needs.
We love sit means sit - Nash has learned so much and the staff it so thoughtful and caters to his individual needs. Highly recommend!

Was a bit apprehensive that an acceptable level of basic obedience training could be accomplished in 4 sessions (1 daily day camp over 4 weeks), I am happy with the results so far. My yellow lab is a stubborn s.o.b. He is now moving into group classes. A few things to note: Trisha was my primary trainer, though Ashley filled in one week. Both are competent, very patient, and answered all the questions that came up. Sit Means Sit uses e-collars. This is an effective training tool that helps reach desired outcomes. It's not used to inflict pain on the dog. They might also suggest a pinch collar as a supplemental tool. Your dog will thank you with good behavior by giving them structure. Most importantly, you have to be an active participant and do training sessions at home as well as keeping consistent rules. Remember, it's you that is being trained...the dog simply responds to it. Knocked off a star for 1 reason: Off leash confidence in my dog behaving was a high priority for me (consistently reminded throughout) and think more attention could have been given than just 1 session. I have zero off leash trust.
