Who said that an old dog can’t learn new tricks? Flóki (neutered 9.5 year old Siberian Husky/German Shepard mix) has gone through extensive training a few years ago and overall is a really well trained and behaved boy. However, in the past year or so, he unfortunately has developed unprovoked aggression towards in-tact (non-neutered) males. I was apprehensive considering getting additional training for Flóki when he is almost 10 years old. He’s not a puppy, so it’s probably “too late/not worth it” at this point of his life. But I’m glad I still believed he would benefit from additional training. The Sit Means Sit team was very flexible to my odd night shift schedule, was very good at communicating, their internal portal was really useful and easy to reference/work with. I was slightly apprehensive that 3, 1 hour private sessions would be effective, but it truly was. They were able to answer all of my questions and give me their thoughts on certain opinions. I noticed a considerable improvement, especially having Hero (a fellow fur employee and in-tact dog) even work with Flóki. With providing Flóki the right tools and direction, I can see his confidence grow. It will take additional time and consistency to have his training really down. The training does not stop once you are done with your sessions. You really need to apply it to everything and everywhere. You’ll also learn that YOU also need to train yourself. Your dog will rely on you to guide them to succeed. You will also learn that you and your dog really rely on each other. Just generally speaking, I can tell that the staff believes that ALL dogs, ALL breeds, ALL backgrounds (whether good or bad) are ALL welcomed, accepted, and provide a safe space to work on you and your dog’s needs. The staff really wants the best interest for both of you. They also have social media pages that current clients can engage and support each other. You’re still part of the community, even if you’re “technically done” with your training package. The program is $$$, but I do appreciate their flexibility in payment options. The cost in training in general is usually pretty expensive that I don’t think a lot of people are aware of when they consider professionally training their dog. I have worked with many different trainers (all of which are great) and SMS has comparable prices. With that being said, be ready to have the financial availability to spend some dollars and change. However, this is an investment that is irreplaceable and will in my opinion, will save you money in different ways. I always believe that a trained dog, is a happy dog.
