At the time I found Alex, I was desperate to help my dog, Scout, find some calm & regain her joy. Scout had been through a lot of change in her 12 years and had grown into an anxious wreck, especially when on a leash. I kid you not… our first outting with Alex yielded results. But the program goes beyond that-deep diving into our own fears & anxieties and how they affected this sweet little girl.

How do you stop dogs from pulling on the leash, especially during hikes or walks?
At Strong Bond Dog Training, we take a trust-based approach to leash training. Instead of forcing your dog to walk in a rigid position, we teach them that leash walking is a partnership. We help your dog understand that being on a leash still allows them to meet their needs—whether it's sniffing, exploring, or moving at a comfortable pace. We also guide you in choosing the right leash length and walk style to create a stress-free experience.

What is the difference between obedience training and trust-based training?
Obedience training focuses on making the dog comply with commands, often without addressing the root cause of behavioral issues. Trust-based dog training, on the other hand, looks at why a dog is acting a certain way and teaches them through communication, leadership, and relationship-building. This leads to lasting behavioral change instead of just quick fixes.

I adopted a severely abused and traumatized ADULT dog who could not be left alone. I was his 4th home and the shelter essentially said “good luck. We’ll probably see you in a few days.” Alex helped me with socializing him, beginner-advanced obedience, and got his recall solid. All the training is based on building mutual trust between me and my dog, which also fixed his separation anxiety. Now, he can task in public for a disability I have, he gets to live his best off leash life on the trails, and he can be home alone without doing any destruction. Alex teaches practical boundaries that are also critical for dog safety. My dog knows not to jump out of the car when I open the doors, leave my house, or step off a sidewalk unless he gets my permission. We recently started agility, and my dog is confident with enough impulse control to work off leash because of my work with Alex.
Alex has been an amazing partner in training my puppy. He is incredibly patient with new “fur parents”! Alex helps you understand how to build a strong, trusting relationship with your pet, which makes obedience training a breeze.

Alex's method of relating to yourself to relate to your dog as a form of communication and training was incredibly helpful in my journey with my rhodesian ridgeback/ cane corso rescue that I adopted summer 2024. She was sweet but that aspect of her personality was covered by a largely unsocialized and fearful, aggressive dog personality. Through Alex's foundational training sessions, my dog and I were able to begin to create a connection and trust in one another which has rippled out into a deep bond and friendship in present day. We continue to use his invaluable tools to go further in her ability to adapt to new environments and situations, though as far as her interactions with other canines go, she has fully rehabilitated any unwanted tendencies and can live a full life playing and socializing with all dogs. And she is exceptional off leash, keeping our bond and connection in the forefront of her experience and attention at all times. Thanks again Alex!

We are incredibly grateful for Alex Canby of Strong Bond Dog Training! We started working with Alex in September 2024 after our dog, Lambchop, began exhibiting reactive behaviors toward other dogs while on leash. While that challenge initially motivated us to seek his help, we had no idea just how transformative the experience would be. Over the next five months, Alex not only helped us to understand Lambchop’s reactivity but also completely changed the way we communicate with her. His philosophy and methods deeply resonated with us, and we saw immediate improvements in our relationship and ability to understand each other. Alex brings a rare combination of expertise, patience, and genuine care to his training. In a nonjudgmental and compassionate way, he helped us recognize how some of our own behaviors were contributing to Lambchop’s reactions—things we had previously found confusing and frustrating. Through his guidance, we developed the tools to meet Lambchop’s needs, helping her become a calmer, more confident dog. Working with Alex has been an invaluable experience, and we cannot recommend him highly enough. If you’re ready to deepen your relationship with your dog and work with a trainer who understands both dog and human psychology, look no further than Strong Bond Dog Training!
