What people have asked about this business.

Question on Google
Does Sunmit provide specialized training for dogs with serious behavioral problems?

We do! For most behavior concerns, we recommend starting with a private lesson package first to get customized one-on-one support. For reactive dog training, we do offer a special group class specifically for dogs that bark, lunge, and growl towards triggers (like other people or dogs) when on leash. For emergency behavior concerns and situations, we offer a Crisis Consultation, which can be a good place to start if you aren't sure what the best next options are for you and your dog's behavior challenges. From this Crisis Consultation, your trainer can recommend either a private lesson package or an appropriate group therapy class suitable for your & your dog's goals.

What age should my puppy be to start classes?

We have Puppy PlaySchool classes for pups as young as 9 weeks of age. If your pup is a minimum of 9 weeks of age, has been in your care for a minimum of 7 days and is on schedule with their veterinarian's recommended vaccination schedule, you are welcome to join us for class! Puppy PlaySchool is divided into two age groups - 9-16 weeks and 16 weeks-6 months. Pups who age out of Puppy PlaySchool can move up to our Level 1 classes.

Question on Google
Do you have drop in style classes for basic manners? I can’t attend a class consistently every week due to my work schedule.

We do have a few! Our Puppy classes are drop-in style, and our Level 2 Training Treks. We also allow class graduates to register for a la carte drop-ins for continued practice that works with their schedule. For folks that need creative scheduling options, outside of those, reach out and let’s discuss what might work for you and we’re happy to work out a plan together.

Question on Google
My dog does poorly with other dogs, do you have special classes or one-on-one training that might suit my dog better than group classes?

We do! We have private lesson programs, which are great places to start for dogs that are more space sensitive and may need some extra support in a customized one-on-one setting. We also have small-group reactive dog classes carefully designed for the success of dogs that bark and lunge at other dogs (or anything else) when on a leash.

Question on Google
In regards to your online training course - How do you ensure the effectiveness of your training videos compared to in-person sessions? I am not well versed in dog training myself and want to make sure I can be effective without someone here

Great question! Our online training courses are self-study with video examples and lectures, so great for learning about common training goals and skills that are applicable to most dogs and many common goals and challenges. We have taken the lessons that work for our in-person students to create these online resources to bring a low-cost and accessible option to potential students around the world. For online students that need help building on the content they are learning in the self-study courses, we can offer more customized support through answering questions posted in our support group, as well as the option to meet virtually to discuss the specifics of you and your dog's goals and help to customize a plan as needed for your success.

Question on Google
I’m so enjoying the Intro to Rally class. My puppy and I are diligently practicing all that we learned but I may want to retake the class before moving on. Is there a discount for retaking the same class with the same dog?

Yes! We do offer a discount coupon code to students who want to retake the same type of class a second time for more practice!

Question on Google
What requirements do you have before a dog can attend an in-person class? Vaccines, social skills, initial one on one, sterilization-- things of that nature.

Great question! For all of our classes, we require your dog to be up to date on veterinary-recommended vaccinations or have applicable vaccination titers. If this isn’t possible for your dog due to health reasons, please reach out to discuss. We do not require spay or neutering for our group classes, but please let us know if your dog comes into heat during weeks of your class. We work with dogs of all ages and abilities, and can support dogs from different socialization and skills backgrounds in a variety of our classes. If your dog is extremely fearful or has a history of aggression towards other dogs or humans, we recommend starting in private lessons first for the most support before joining a group class. For dogs that bark and lunge at other dogs on leash, we have a Reactive Dog class just for them to get started before moving to our regular class track when they are ready.

Question on Google
Do you have any options to help dogs that get anxious for vet or grooming visits?

We have a group class called Cooperative Care that's all about building positive routines and emotions around veterinary and grooming care. We also have many clients working on this goal in private lessons as well, and we collaborate with a wonderful team of veterinarians and groomers for referrals for these pups that need extra support in these areas.

Question on Google
Do I need to pay up front & commit to a certain number of sessions if I do one-on-one training?

Great question! Our initial program of private lessons is five lessons and we do collect payment up front for these packages; we find that for most training and behavior goals, this is a good place to start. If additional training support is needed after the initial 5 lessons, we make a recommendation for a customized follow-up packages. We do offer some payment plan options for these full packages. For folks who would like to start with just a single session and get a trainer's customized recommendation on where to go from there, we recommend starting with a single-appointment Crisis Consultation, which is a great way to get a customized recommendation before committing to a full package.

Question on Google
What sorts of classes do you offer that will help my doggo behave better in public? I like to take her places but I would like to know she can behave without my having to worry all the time!

This is one of our favorite subjects to teach on! Teaching for public manners starts in our Level 1 classes with general skills and emotional regulation. All of our Level 2 group classes are geared towards Colorado Life Skills and themed after different common public manners goals: Loose Leash Walking, Polite Greetings, Recalls & Stays, and - one of our favorites and most popular - Brewery Manners. Our Level 3 & beyond classes refine this skills with advanced manners challenges working towards Canine Good Citizen and Adventure Dog (hiking and other adventures) goals. We also have a drop-in Training Treks class that takes all of these skills on the road to different locations for practice in different public environments.

The Summit Dog Training Community is the best! I drive all the way from Boulder with my dog to attend classes and special events there, and when I’ve missed class because of weather, the material is all online with references to additional enrichment activities and products. You cannot go wrong by selecting Summit Dog Training! We've used Sarah and Angela and it's amazing how much we've learned with them. Training tricks was easy, but Summit has been instrumental in helping us communicate with our dog to help her in helping herself or recognizing when we need to help her. Our focus right now is behavioral issues and this is where Summit has shined for us. You won't see negative reinforcement like e-collars or anything disgusting like that. They get to know you and your dogs' relationship and teach communication and implement research-based strategies for addressing their needs using positive reinforcement. What you actually do depends on the needs of your pet so it's hard to summarize. But, you work with an expert who observes you and your pet, and helps you find effective strategies to meet your goals while also creating a fun training environment. Not only this, but you can correspond with your trainer to: ask questions, analyze videos, etc. They make a huge effort to not only understand and explain your dogs' comfort, but they are happy to explain forward-looking aspects of the sessions (i.e. the "what" and "why" of each sessions focus). Finding a trainer was unnecessarily difficult and we're so thankful we found Summit because they have been an invaluable resource. We look forward to each session because we learn so much about our strategies and how we can be more effective in meeting goals. Summit trainers are encouraging, patient, personable, and they pick up on things you don't notice. If you trust their expertise, you'll be amazed by what you learn.

I can’t say enough good things about Summit Dog training! I adopted Penny when she was 5 months old. Summit has helped me gain the confidence and skills to help Penny explore the world, we have taken two training classes with Sarah (reactive dog 101, smells like teen spirit) and I can see the difference in Penny and myself. Sarah has been supportive and so informative on training games and strategies. Summit also has great opportunities to practice the skills I’ve learned in training treks and play groups. Not to mention a monthly get together for dog owners to share stories of their pups and get reassurance that we aren’t alone! Thank you Summit for all you do!

It's difficult to rate the training when I am not there to see what is happening. I try to go to the video section but I find your website very difficult to navigate and often cannot open the videos to see my pet in action at your facility. He seems excited to come, so I am giving 5 stars, but it would be nice if the entire sessions could be videoed so owners could see exactly what goes on while they are not there.
