Gerardo worked with both of our shelter rescue hounds, each with different needs and temperaments. Louie, our 2-year-old male hound, is highly intelligent, energetic, and stubborn, with a bit of a bossy streak when he feels comfortable. He also has a fearful side around new people and situations; while he’s not aggressive, he tends to shut down. I had no clue how to train him. Since Louie had not met Gerardo before our first session, he was initially fearful and avoidant, and I worried that we wouldn’t be able to train. However, within a few minutes, Gerardo established trust and built Louie’s confidence by giving him the opportunity to overcome his fear. I was amazed and learned a lot from how Gerardo captured Louie’s attention and helped him work through his fear in a productive way. We were able to work on consistent recall, respecting the fence gate (he’s figured out how to open it), and walking on leash without pulling. After the session, Louie seemed contentedly tired for the first time in a while, and I feel like I understand him much better. Gerardo's ability to adapt his training style was evident with both dogs. Lou Ann, our 11-year-old hound, also showed great improvement. Despite her good manners, she is a classic hound with a stubborn streak and a tendency to follow her nose. Within minutes of working with Gerardo, she was consistently listening to her name and respecting entryways, waiting patiently instead of bolting out when the door or gate opened. I was shocked by the progress we all made in just one session, and that I was able to practice with them the next day, retaining what we had learned! I am looking forward to more sessions and highly recommend Gerardo for any dog training needs.
