Questions & answers

From Google

What people have asked about this business.

Can training reduce or eliminate my dog's need for anxiety medication?

Possibly! Many dogs on anxiety medication (Prozac, Trazodone, etc.) improve so dramatically with training that their vets reduce or eliminate medications. Here's why: much canine anxiety stems from lack of structure, unclear leadership, and not knowing what's expected. Our training provides all of that, which naturally reduces anxiety. The "place" command specifically teaches dogs to settle and calm themselves, which is therapeutic. However, some dogs have chemical imbalances requiring medication regardless of training—these dogs benefit from BOTH medication and training together. Never stop medication without veterinary guidance, but absolutely mention to your vet after training that your dog's anxiety has improved. Many Frisco vets work with us and have seen patients successfully reduce medication after our program. Training addresses behavioral anxiety; medication addresses chemical anxiety. Often dogs need both initially but can taper medication once trained!

Question on Google
I'm pregnant and need my dog trained before the baby arrives. How much time do I need?

Ideally, start training at least 8-12 weeks before your due date to give yourself buffer time. Board & train takes 2-4 weeks, then you need several weeks at home to reinforce the training and practice with baby-related items (strollers, cribs, baby sounds). If you're already in your third trimester, don't panic—board & train is perfect because WE do the training while you're preparing for baby. The sooner you start, the better, but we've successfully trained dogs for expectant Frisco parents even with tight timelines. During training, we'll specifically work on boundaries around baby gear, calm behavior, and the "place" command (crucial when you're feeding or changing the baby). After training, you'll have a dog that respects boundaries and stays calm around the new arrival. Don't wait—call us at 866-598-3853 today to start before baby comes!

Question on Google
What if my dog is dog-aggressive but all my friends have dogs? Can my dog ever have dog friends again?

This is a tough situation, but there's hope! The goal of training isn't necessarily to make your dog-aggressive dog love all dogs (some dogs are just naturally selective or introverted), but rather to create obedience and impulse control so your dog can COEXIST peacefully around other dogs without fighting. After training, your dog may not want to play at the dog park, but they'll be able to walk past other dogs calmly, be in the same room during gatherings, and ignore dogs rather than lunging at them. Some dog-aggressive dogs do develop friendships with specific, calm dogs after training—the structure and leadership reduces their anxiety that caused aggression. During your $1 first lesson, we'll assess whether your Frisco dog can potentially have supervised dog friendships or if management and avoidance is safer long-term. We'll be realistic about expectations!

Question on Google
How soon after adopting a rescue dog should I start training?

We recommend waiting about 2-4 weeks after adoption to let your rescue decompress and adjust to your home—this is called the "honeymoon period." During this time, your dog's true personality will emerge, and you'll get a clearer picture of what behaviors need addressing. Starting training too soon can be overwhelming when everything is already new and stressful. However, if your rescue is showing serious aggression, extreme anxiety, or dangerous behaviors immediately, don't wait—call us right away at 866-598-3853. For most rescues, giving them a few weeks to settle, then starting training creates the best foundation for long-term success. Your rescue will thrive with the structure and clarity our training provides!

Question on Google
Do you train dogs for specific sports like agility, dock diving, or competition obedience?

Our focus is on practical, real-world obedience and behavior modification for family pets, not competition sports or specialized activities. However, our training provides an excellent foundation if you want to pursue dog sports later! Dogs that complete our program have the focus, impulse control, and handler attention needed for virtually any canine activity. Many clients tell us that after our training, their dogs excel in agility classes, nosework, or other sports because they already have solid obedience and focus. If competitive obedience or specific dog sports are your primary goal, we can build the foundation, but you may want to work with sport-specific trainers afterward for advanced competition skills and titles.

Question on Google
What if I work long hours? Can my dog still be trained successfully?

Absolutely! In fact, busy professionals in Frisco are some of our best clients, and board & train is perfect for your situation. Your dog stays with a trainer for 2-4 weeks and receives intensive daily training while you're at work—no need to rearrange your schedule or take time off. When you pick up your dog, they're already fully trained, and we teach you everything during the handoff session. If you prefer in-home lessons, we can schedule evening or weekend appointments that fit your work schedule. The key is consistency AFTER training, which only takes a few minutes daily. A trained dog actually makes your busy life easier—no more coming home to destruction or chaos!

Question on Google
Can you stop my dog from stealing and hiding items like socks, shoes, or my belongings?

Yes! Dogs that steal items and run away, hide under furniture with stolen goods, or play "keep away" are demonstrating lack of respect for boundaries and often seeking attention (even negative attention is rewarding!). Our training addresses this through the "off" command (leave it immediately) and strong recall (come and drop the item). We also teach "place," which gives your dog somewhere to be instead of wandering around looking for things to steal. During board & train, we specifically practice around tempting items until your dog has the impulse control to leave them alone. After training, you'll be able to leave shoes out, socks on the floor, or items within reach without your Frisco dog stealing them for ransom. The bonus? You'll also be able to take items from your dog's mouth without a fight or chase!

Question on Google
Can training help with anxiety around thunderstorms, fireworks, or loud noises?

Yes! While we can't eliminate your dog's natural startle response to loud noises, our training significantly reduces anxiety-based reactions. The "place" command is especially helpful—it gives your dog a safe spot to settle during storms or fireworks instead of pacing, panting, hiding, or trying to escape. Our training also builds overall confidence and teaches your dog to look to you for reassurance during stressful situations. Many Frisco clients report that after training, their dogs still notice storms and fireworks but remain much calmer and more manageable. We'll also teach you specific techniques for managing noise anxiety. While severe noise phobias may require additional veterinary behavioral support, training provides a strong foundation for improvement.

Question on Google
What if my dog only misbehaves when I'm not home? Will training help with behaviors I don't witness?

Absolutely! Behaviors that only happen when you're gone—destruction, house soiling, excessive barking, trash raiding, counter surfing—often stem from separation anxiety, boredom, or the dog knowing they can get away with things when unsupervised. Our training addresses the root causes: we establish leadership and boundaries (your dog respects rules whether you're present or not), teach impulse control (resist temptations even without supervision), and provide the "place" command (gives your dog a job—stay on your bed—when you're gone). During board & train, trainers leave dogs alone periodically to practice calm behavior during absences. Many clients set up cameras and are amazed watching their formerly destructive dog simply relax on "place" when home alone after training. The structure and confidence-building reduce anxiety that caused misbehavior. Your dog learns the rules apply 24/7, not just when you're watching!

Question on Google
What if my dog is overweight, elderly, or has physical limitations?

We work with dogs of all fitness levels and ages! If your dog has physical limitations—arthritis, hip dysplasia, obesity, or age-related issues—we'll modify training to accommodate their needs. Training doesn't require marathons or intense physical activity. Much of our work focuses on mental exercise and impulse control, which actually tires dogs out more than physical exercise! The "place" command, for example, is mostly mental work. We'll consult with you about any health concerns during your $1 first lesson and may request veterinary clearance for dogs with serious conditions. Many overweight or senior Frisco dogs thrive in our program because training provides mental stimulation without physical stress. Age and fitness aren't barriers—they just require thoughtful adaptation!

Question on Google
Can you train my dog to behave around my cats or other household pets?

Absolutely! Many Frisco households have multiple pets, and teaching your dog to coexist peacefully is completely achievable. Our training teaches impulse control, which is the key to stopping chasing, fixating, or aggressive behavior toward other animals. The "place" command keeps your dog in a designated spot while cats move freely, and the "off" command stops unwanted interactions. During board & train, we work with dogs around various animals to build their impulse control. By the time you get your dog home, they'll have the foundation to remain calm around your other pets. We'll coach you during handoff on managing multi-pet households successfully. Most clients see dramatic improvement in cat-dog relationships after training!

Question on Google
What if my family members don't agree on training methods or don't want to use the e-collar?

This is a common concern, and we completely understand! Many Frisco families have differing opinions about training before they see the results. Here's what we recommend: Start with the $1 first lesson so everyone can meet the trainer, ask questions, and see a demonstration. We'll explain exactly how the e-collar works and address concerns. Most skeptical family members change their minds once they understand the tool and see the results. However, if someone in your household refuses to use the training methods, it can undermine your dog's progress. Consistency is crucial—everyone must be on the same page. We'll work with your whole family during handoff to ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident. Usually, once people see their dog's transformation, any hesitation disappears completely!

Community answer · Tip Top K9 · 2025-11-21

Question on Google
Can you help if my dog is aggressive specifically toward children?

Yes, and this is extremely important to address immediately! Aggression toward children is dangerous and requires professional intervention right away. We've successfully worked with many dogs that showed aggression, fear, or reactivity around kids. Our training teaches impulse control, builds confidence, and establishes you as the leader so your dog looks to you for guidance around children instead of reacting defensively. During board & train, we expose your dog to controlled situations with people of all ages. However, we'll be honest during your $1 first lesson about your dog's prognosis—some cases require extensive work and ongoing management. Child safety is non-negotiable, and we'll give you a realistic assessment and safety plan for your Frisco family.

Question on Google
How quickly will I see improvements from your Frisco training program?

Most Frisco families see dramatic, noticeable improvements after their very first Dog Training session! Our proven Dog Training system creates fast results—typically within just one week of starting your program. Whether you choose our intensive 2-4 week board and train Dog Training bootcamp or prefer in-home private Dog Training lessons, you'll see your dog listening better, displaying calmer behavior, walking politely on leash without pulling, and responding reliably to commands. Community answer · Tip Top K9 · 2025-11-21

Question on Google
How do you work with dogs that have been abused or have severe trauma history?

We work with traumatized and abused dogs regularly, and we approach them with patience, understanding, and expertise. Dogs with trauma backgrounds often display fear, anxiety, aggression, or shutdown behaviors. Our training is actually therapeutic for these dogs because it provides structure, predictability, and clear communication—things they likely never had before. We go at the dog's pace, building trust and confidence gradually. The e-collar, used properly at low levels, gives us a gentle way to communicate without physical force, which is especially important for abuse survivors. Many of our most heartwarming success stories involve severely traumatized dogs that blossomed into confident, happy family members. We never give up on these dogs—they deserve a second chance, and we're committed to helping them overcome their past!

Community answer · Tip Top K9 · 2025-11-21

Question on Google
Do you train guard dogs or personal protection dogs?

We specialize in obedience training and behavior modification for family pets, not protection work or bite training. Our training will give your dog excellent obedience, impulse control, and confidence—and many clients report their dogs naturally become better watch dogs because they're calmer and more alert after training. However, we don't teach dogs to attack on command or provide personal protection training. If you're looking for a true protection dog, we recommend seeking specialized protection dog trainers who focus exclusively on that skillset. That said, a well-trained obedient dog with our system is often the best deterrent—they're confident, under control, and responsive to your commands in any situation.

We cannot thank Cody and Emma enough for the incredible transformation they’ve worked with our dog, Ruffles! Over just 4 weeks, they turned our pup from a trail-walking troublemaker who ignored commands into a well-behaved companion who now loves his daily walks and listens to most commands at home. Their expertise, patience, and dedication to Ruffles’ training were truly remarkable. If you’re looking for top-notch dog trainers who genuinely care, Cody and Emma are the absolute best! Highly recommend!

Kody was super helpful and accommodating from the very start. We were not expecting great results for our 5 year old German Shepherd as he is very territorial but we have gotten him to a great place in just 8 lessons. Would definitely recommend Kody for all of your dog training needs.

From Cody's home visit, to Cameron picking up Toby at the agreed upon time, to the office staff answering my questions, to the personal phone call from the camp trainer while Toby was away, to the text updates on Toby's progress (including a progress video), I have been very impressed with Tip Top K9 Training. Toby spent 11 days in their care and is now home. He is the same fun loving dog, but with a much better grasp on basic commands. He will still need some practice (and so will we as we continue to work on our own training, such as being consistent and being quick with praise) by attending the weekly classes, but I am so happy to have had the jump start camp provides. Cody brought Toby home for his "Graduation party" and it's obvious both how knowledgeable and loving the trainers are with the dogs in their care.
