I was at the verge twice to rehome my dog (an Akita mix), but that’s not my style and my heart was too connected to his. Upon sharing my challenge with a friend, he found University K-9 in Portland/Clackamas, Oregon for a 2-week training course. I was in over my head and every day was stressful because I couldn’t control him. The last straw was when he dug a tunnel under the fence and ended up on the road. When we coaxed him home, I was relieved, but I knew I wasn’t able to keep him safe without more help. He went to “boot camp” right away and two weeks later, he was ready for me. I was nervous. When I picked him up, I kept with my mantra that I can do this, I’m ready, I’m up for the task to continue training. And I must say, I am absolutely delighted with the peace in my home now. He listens, I do my part, I communicate with Chris sharing a challenge, and he gives me instructions. Between neutering him, Chris’s training with his kind, positive voice and my training of myself to believe I can keep it going has equalled to a REAL, visible and experiential change. It’s been several weeks now and this is consistent.
