I have a King Charles Cavalier puppy, and she has showed me how to help him grow into a cooperative, obedient (most of the time!) family member. Since our dog, Willow, was a puppy, we noticed she was fearful of strangers and did not respond well to being approached while on the leash. We were always hesitant to do training because we didn’t consider her to be “disobedient” and didn’t know if she would even let anyone near her. Additionally, training just was not feasible with our busy schedules. After moving to the downtown area and coming in contact with many obstacles during our walks, we decided we needed to pursue some training with our now, 3 year old Bernese/Pyrenees. That’s when we decided to work with Wags on Tails, and it was one of the best decisions we could have ever made. Upon initial evaluation, Maria identified that Willow was very loyal to her owners and recommended we go for the coaching route to get the best results. Maria personalized our training and used Willow’s loyalty to us to her advantage. She coached us on how to increase Willow’s confidence, and was incredibly patient with our fearful pup. Her positive reinforcement techniques proved incredibly successful, as opposed to beep collars and clickers that historically just scared our dog away. Having her come to our house and work around our schedules made the process so much easier. Maria allowed us to set the goals for our training with Willow, instead of forcing us to subscribe to the traditional idea of “obedience.” Lastly, we loved that Maria was willing to meet us to train in the places that we take our dog most often. Training in familiar places made Willow so much more confident in her favorite spots around Spartanburg.
