Walking with Walter Dog Training offers training for every dog and family along the Colorado Front Range. We specialize in advanced and basic obedience. In addition to obedience we provide behavior modification training with a focus on teaching owners how to properly communicate with their dogs. Like any relationship, communication is the key to success. Our training starts with a strong foundation built on the basics. I have a 7 yr old bulldog who started growling at me when I get near his food. We've never had aggression issues before this started. He has never bitten me, but I am worried he will. What can I do?
If not addressed it can get worse. For the time being I’d recommend making your dog wait patiently while the food is put out. Do not allow him to “rush” the bowl. He needs to understand that protecting his food is an unwanted and unnecessary behavior. However, if you are not comfortable with that, contact me ASAP so we can get to work on changing his behavior.

Why does my 2 year old Black Lab bark every time the doorbell rings?
It boils down to your relationship with your dog and what you allow and don’t allow. If the dog barks and you tell it to stop barking and it does not stop then you’ve got some relationship building to do with the dog. Dogs must understand what good behavior is.

How old does my dog need to be before I start training?
You can start training basic obedience as early as 8 weeks old. In addition to obedience, this is the best time to start introducing your dog to as many sights, sounds and smells as possible. Call me or schedule an evaluation and I am happy to provide some guidance.

My 4 yr old German Shepherd pulls me down the street when we walk. I love my dog, but can’t stand taking him for a walk anymore. Can you help with a dog who has a mind of his own when on leash?
I am sorry to hear that walks have become such a chore. Yes, I can help. I teach owners how to train their dogs to walk nicely on a loose leash. If you are interested in a training session, the best place to start is with an evaluation.

My puppy is eating/chewing everything in the house. How do I stop her?
Chewing is very common with puppies. It is important to have chew toys handy as an alternative to a household item. Show her what is an acceptable item to chew on. The ol’ “this instead of that” technique. : )

Bonus, his 10 year old brother Gus got a nice refresher as well. Thanks Lawren. Highly recommend and have recomended Walking with Walter dog training. PS It wasn't the dog who needed the training.

Lawren was quick to access our pup Piper's needs and he adjusted his training so that Piper could thrive. Another aspect that we are grateful for is that Lawren trained us as the owners on how to best serve Piper day to day. I can't say enough good things about working with Lawren! After going against my better judgement and adopting a reactive australian cattle dog puppy, I was overwhelmed with training her and didn't even know where to start. We started at-home sessions for Millie and we saw some improvement, but it quickly became obvious I didn't have the tools to teach her. We did 4 weeks of board-and-train and, while she definitely still has major work to do, I feel like I can just enjoy and love her, whereas before she was a constant source of stress and resentment. Lawren is incredibly personable and trustworthy. He was always easy to get ahold of and never made me feel like a burden for asking a million questions. I'm so grateful for Lawren's patience (with me probably more than Millie!) because he taught me how to communicate with her, how to understand her behavior, and how to continue the training confidently at home. It was the best decision we could have made for her. I truly can’t recommend LB enough.

Had such an amazing experience working with Lawren and later Trin as well! Just finished up my 5 session pack and I couldn’t be happier with the results for my 5 year old dog Remi. We worked on leash pulling, building my dog’s confidence and more. Lawren worked around my own physical limitations when training and gave me plans tailored around mine and my dogs needs. Towards the end we went over what I had listed as things I wanted to work on and I couldn’t believe how far we had gone in just 5 sessions! “Reactivity to other dogs” felt so far away at that point because of how much Lawren helped work on my dog’s confidence. It was amazing! I’m able to enjoy some loose leash walks with my dog so much more now and I look forward to working together again!
