Rattlesnake Avoidance Training - My dog and I took the Rattlesnake Avoidance Training at Jane Trains. There are two methods to teach a dog to stay away from Rattlesnakes, one is a sharp shock with a stimulator collar (Aversion training) and the other is training an alert behavior (Avoidance). I chose the method where the dog alerts the owner when a snake is present and they both avoid the snake. My dog Vinnie and I participated in the Rattlesnake Avoidance classes offered by Jane Gerard at JaneTrains.The series lasted several weeks as we went step by step to learn the behaviors Vinnie needed to alert me to the presence of a Rattlesnake. The result has been mind blowing, Vinnie now knows how to warn me if he sees, hears or smells a snake. He won't go near it, but instead backs away, barks and comes to me and barks again. Although we used decoys in class, the sound was real, the smell was real from an old dried snakeskin, and the visual was a realistic rubber snake. We practiced a lot with various scenarios and I am confident that Vinnie will reliably avoid Rattlesnakes encountered on our walks. This is serious work but Jane makes it enjoyable by encouraging the class and giving her full attention to each pair of us. Jane's Positive Training method makes for calm, attentive dogs (and people), There is never punishment or fear for the dog, only a cookie and praise. And we can always get a do-over.

Jane deeply understands the relationship between dogs and their owners. She helped us understand Sophie's "puppy panic" ( she and her brothers and sisters were abandoned), and provided the interventions we needed to emotionally help her. We have worked with Jane for almost a year and Sophie has become more confident and is the sweetest dog we have ever had. We highly recommend Jane for her training expertise!

Jane was an incredible asset to us and I cannot recommend her more! We took our 2 year old male cattle dog husky mix to her for help with some guarding and possessive behavior knowing we didn’t want to subject him to the e-collar type obedience training. Jane was such a help with understanding his emotions that led to the reactions and how we can mitigate the behavior by changing his emotional state gently and ethically. So much better than e-collar/obedience training and so successful! She also helped us with our other dog, an 8 year old female border collie mix that has high anxiety and fear about the world. This dog is the type that has no “behavior” issues but she gave us so much insight into how this dog perceived the world and how we could make her more comfortable existing in it. Even if you don’t think your dog needs training, you’d be surprised at how much insight Jane has into their behavior and what certain actions actually mean. I recommend her to literally anyone with a dog, young or old! You will learn so so much. She also has horses that love celery and pets!
