Deborah, first let me say that I am very sorry that your experience was negative. Clearly there was a miscommunication, despite our best effort to always explain the rationale behind what we do and “check in” throughout as well.The protocol you described, while omitting pertinent details, is sometimes used for dogs with aggressive or reactive tendencies. The large kennel, in which we temporarily position the owner and their dog, is utilized as an added safety measure while we assess the dog’s reactivity to stimuli such as another dog or person. The owner & dog are securely contained inside the kennel during the process to ensure everyone’s safety. The large kennel is securely latched, and all dogs are leased 100% of the time. At no time during the evaluation exercise is anyone, dog or human, in any danger. Safety is the highest priority at all times. We often use “pack therapy” in our training and the two dogs who routinely assist most have helped countless other dogs. Both are very smart German Shepherds and neither one is remotely “vicious” as you stated above. Tessa may have barked at your dog (while being securely on leash), but as our “alpha” she often corrects our pack with barking. It’s likely that Titus, a very laid-back dog, also helped, although you did not mention his amiable demeanor. Understanding the nature of a dog’s reactivity triggers (people/high energy dogs/low energy dogs/dogs of a certain size or gender, etc) helps us create a baseline upon which we can construct an improvement plan. Additionally, the situation allows owner and dog to work together and develop strategies to re-focus the dog’s energy away from the stressful stimuli and back to the owner. Based on years of canine interactions and continuous professional training, our protocol has helped many dogs and owners live better lives together.
