Question on Google
Does this company use electric collars for training?

Yes.. however do your research when looking at all forms of training... When I was a client, they offered demonstrations and explanations so you can evaluate their methods.

Community answer · John Wagg · 2017-09-21

If you want a happy and healthy relationship with your dog you WILL come here! They saved my GSD's life. He came to us unsocialized at two years old, and he was terribly fear aggressive - other forms of training made him worse. Don't believe anyone who says collar training is harmful. PEOPLE are harmful - and those who misuse a collar, will misuse any other form of training too.

Community answer · Megan Fisher · 2018-09-21

I have found that electric collars get a bad reputation because of inappropriate use. Sit Means Sit teaches using the collar as an attention getter like a tap on the shoulder - not as punishment. A lot of praise and positive reinforcement is recommended. The dogs are happy and excited to learn and to please. My experience and observation confirms how humane this collar can be if used correctly.

Community answer · Sandra Papiez · 2018-09-21

Initially we were not too keen on a dog training place that used an e-collar but I did sign up for their training as they came highly recommended by many, to give us the results that we were looking for. And at the end of 3 weeks of intense training I can say we made the best decision ever. Each and every trainer was amazing and ensured that we understood (really ensured) how they worked our dog . The training gave us the necessary tools for us to feel confident with our dog in different scenarios.....this was gold. Would highly recommend spending the days off between training (even if it is a few minutes) to go over the commands introduced to your dog and share your challenges/wins with the trainers ,before the next class. The trainers were ever willing to help with any questions and provide solutions. It was a commitment for sure but a very rewarding one ,both for us and our dog.

Clearly Phoebe has no experience with training collars. Our dog went to Sit Means Sit for training and I can't tell you how excited she gets when we get her collar out. Training for her is like play time and she loves it. I have tried the collar on personally and can tell you from first hand experience it does not hurt.

Mako gets the structure & practice she needs and I get trained too. If you're still thinking about it, just do it!! I promise you won't be disappointed.

SMS is outstanding, the trainers and staff are phenominal! We brought Albert into our home at 10 weeks and he was great. We started puppy training at another recommended facility by the time he was 8 months old he was a terror. The training facility was unable to help so we contacted a dog behavioralist that did not work. In the fall of 2014 we discovered SMS. David picked Albert up for the week long immersion training and he came back the sweet puppy we had at the beginning. Albert and I continue to train and I am proud to say that he has just past his Go Team Therapy Dog training. I would recommend SMS to anyone. My only wish is that we knew about them sooner. 9/14/2025 Albert has been going to SMS since he was a year old. He is now 12 and continues with his training. The staff at SMS has been so knowledgeable with training as Albert ages. Every time we attend a session we learn something new. Albert is able to continue traveling with us and I give all the credit to the staff because of the training, knowledge, and support.

My dog has gone through puppy classes and SMS training and I can’t stop raving about the staff and training to others. But even more importantly than me being pleased is that others who know my dog before and after the training are very impressed about how well she is behaved. We attend weekly group classes and my children are learning to train her as well. The staff is very knowledgeable and patiently explain techniques to me in terms I can understand.

I have been taking my dog to Sit Means Sit Detroit since January 2024. My dog is a Shiba Inu, a beautiful but stubborn, and extremely difficult to train breed of dog. My husband and I were at our wits’ ends trying to get him to follow commands and stop destructive behavior, typical characteristics of the Shiba breed. He was an escape artist and had chewed all his harnesses, collars and leashes off. We were so afraid he would run away or be hit and killed by a car. We were on the verge of giving up when we learned about Sit Means Sit and gave them a try. What a difference their training has made! Our Nico is now a calm, well-behaved boy, and we love him so much! We tell everyone about Sit Means Sit and highly recommend their excellent training for dogs! As an update, it’s been 1-1/2 years since we enrolled Nico in Sit Means Sit training. Everyone we meet comments on what a well-behaved, friendly dog he is. He goes to weekly group classes, and we are able to do gated trail walks with him off leash. I would have never dreamed that our former escape artist would ever be so well trained that we could dare to have him be off leash. I tell everyone who has trouble with their dog’s behavior to please check out Sit Means Sit of Rochester Hills. You won’t be sorry you did!

Logan has been attending group class for over a year and his progress is amazing. Each week is a different activity and the variety makes his training enjoyable for both of us. He gets better each week and am glad we attend Sit Means Sit.
