A friend recently reached out to me after reading a review of Sit Means Sit, specifically about their use of remote training collars. Knowing that I had used Sit Means Sit to train my hound, they were curious about my opinion of their methods. I am a veterinarian who once had a young, rambunctious pitbull mix who was lovely but very strong and had few manners in social situations. 11 years after completing a training program with Matt, I still have my gentlemanly senior dog. A dog who has graduated from a canine blood donor program after 8 years of donations, a dog who respectfully listens to the young kids in my household, a dog who has become a beautiful advocate for his breed. I cannot speak highly enough of Matt and this program. I realize there can be some negative association with the use of a 'shock' collar, however their sms collars can utilize a vibrate function, which gains the dog's attention. It is followed up with a verbal command and then positively reinforced with a high value reward individualized for each pet (my dog's positive reward was play time with his favorite stuffed duck). This is a widely accepted behavior conditioning called operant conditioning. There is no doubt that in the wrong hands, a 'shock' collar can offer varying results, but this is why you hire a professional. Matt and his team are those professionals.

They use a shock collar here. Don’t do it! Save yourself the money and the heart ache and find a good trainer who doesn’t use punishment style training. They’ll say they use it to get dog’s attention and they have bunch of excuses to justify using it. A good trainer doesn’t need to shock a dog. As a veterinarian, I would warn any dog owner to stay away. These methods can cause worse anxiety and therefore worse behavior in the future.
