We are soon getting a puppy. We haven't had a puppy for about 12 years. We'd like to do a better job of training this one. How soon should we start a class?
Hi Jeanne, thank you so much for contacting The Persuaded Pooch. Congratulations on your new pup... How exciting! Normally, I would say that your pup should come to puppy class at 8 weeks of age for socialization. However, we are not able to have puppy classes currently due to restrictions on the space. Therefore, we recommend private training as soon as possible after you bring your puppy home. Sometimes we have clients book the New Puppy Consultation even before they bring their puppy home, so we can help them be prepared from Day 1. Do you train dogs to be therapy dogs? If so, what is the cost and length of training
Hi John! Thank you for your message. We do not certify therapy dogs. However, if you are seeking to get into a therapy dog certification program, or refine your dog’s therapy dog skills once you are in a program, we can assist. 2017 Review: Sarah worked with my husband and I with our 3 dogs Emma, Stout, and Porter. Their behaviors improved over the course of our 4 sessions. I purchased a 4 session bundle, and I was happy that we could extend the times between sessions to a biweekly or even monthly basis. Sarah gave us tips and tricks as "homework" to work on with our dogs in between sessions. Edit 2019 Review: My above review really reflected Sarah’s work with our dogs at home. I did have a positive experience with private lessons. However, I have mixed reviews about her classroom training. Our dog Porter attended classroom training a while ago, and we had a positive experience. We brought our dog Stout in for the same class. Stout has a problem with barking and walking on leash, and it can be very difficult to calm him down. We paid for the class and within 10 mins of my husband arriving with Stout Sarah told my husband he could not stay in the class. Her reason was that Stout was going to be a distraction for the other dogs. OK well that’s why we are here for better control around stimulus. This is not something that can happen with private lessons. Stout is very well behaved in the home, but he is crazy when on walks and with other dogs that he doesn’t know. He knows all the basic tricks and then some. It took me a long time to update this review as I felt like there was no hope for Stout. I believed that there wasn’t a group setting Stout could learn in, and he’s older now (4). Maybe you can’t teach a dog new tricks? Well, that’s not the case. We enrolled Stout in the training at the Bridgeton Petsmart where the trainer shouted “EVERY DOG IS WELCOME” over Stouts barking for the first 10mins of class. Mary immediately gave us tips on his barks like grabbing his hips and turning him away. The rest of the 50min class he was basically not barking at all and responding well under stimulus. This is in one class!! I’m so happy we took a gamble taking him there, and I feel like Sarah’s approach should of been every dog is welcome. Based on that, I’m lowering my review to 3 stars. If you’re just doing new puppy training or private lessons, then she’s may be a good fit. But she did not have the desire or skills to teach our more difficult dog in a group setting.
Sarah Hoth was extremely helpful in helping our anxious Boxer gain more confidence. We are very grateful for her support with Rudy. Sarah is very professional, informative and easy to talk to. She is readily available for feedback and questions. Our veterinarian could not recommend her more. Thank you for helping Rudy become a happier dog

We really enjoyed the classes with Sarah, and so did Kirby. We haven't had a dog for awhile, and we were determined to get a great start with our new puppy,. We wanted to avoid making the same mistakes we've made in the past. Sarah helped us be patient by seeing the world as a pup does, and that reading his body cues was as important as giving clear communication to him. Her excellent videos complemented the classes so we could review and practice at home. She created a great learning environment and generously offered suggestions for individual concerns. She gave each of the dogs and owners opportunities to perform under her watchful eyes, and offered individualized help with each puppy.
