Tulsa Dog Training Club

I've been taking lessons here for three years with my dog, and I recommend this place to every dog owner that I know. We started with puppy obedience and have worked our way up to Master Rally (I didn't even know what rally was when I started--it's like fun obedience games with your dog). What started simply as my desire for a well behaved puppy has turned into a fantastic hobby that my dog and I both love--and we've even won a couple of ribbons in competitions, too! Whether you're trying to train your first dog and know nothing about dog training, or you're interested in competing in obedience, rally, agility, and other sports, this is an excellent place. It seems most classes have a limit of about 10 dogs per class, which is a good class size to learn by watching others as well as get 1:1 feedback when you're stuck. It also means that the earlier you sign up for classes, the better chance you'll get into the one you prefer! The trainers here know what they're doing and have had many years of success helping people train their dogs through positive reinforcement. All of the trainers are volunteers, and they teach because they genuinely love dogs and love helping people. Every trainer I've personally worked with has earned multiple awards in dog competitions through the American Kennel Club. They all have different personalities and styles, but they all use the same foundational approach and philosophy, so don't be afraid to bounce around to different classes until you find someone you and your dog really click with. I took beginner obedience with Chris Medlock, and in that class I finally overcame many of my dog's frustrating behaviors. (Oh my gosh, just thinking back to how badly behaved he was then it makes me a hundred times more grateful that I've stuck with it!!) For the quality of training, the price is extremely reasonable. Much cheaper than chain pet stores. Plus, for rescue dogs, there's a discounted class price. You can also get discounts by volunteering at various events or competitions that they host. Check it out and give it a try! Having a well trained dog is so worth the effort.

Not the place for us! Too loud and nothing separating the other trainers in the place yelling at the other dog training class (obedience class, I guess). Our puppy did not know where to put his attention. (Kind of like any puppy!) When the instructor wanted you to do something with your puppy it would have been nice if they didn't have their back turned to you. Just not a good fit for us. Wouldn't recommend and won't go back.

We've decided not to continue with puppy classes after the trainer not only made my husband intensely uncomfortable, but also did not seem to have an idea of how to fill up 7 classes with training. My husband is the one who attended the classes, so this is based on his retelling. The trainer was constantly singling out my husband and our puppy - at first because she was easy to work with, but the trainer's behavior toward my husband became increasingly innapropriate. She seemed to be finding reasons to be in his personal space beyond what was reasonable for training, and then started talking about having "Dreams" about him, which she left up to interpritation. He also said she kept making strange comments toward him specifically that had nothing to do with our dog. Beyond this, she really did not seem to have a syllabus or idea of what to teach them each week, and while my husband did learn some and wanted to continue, the lack of actual new material and the increasing discomfort he has felt has made this too weird to want to continue. We were looking forward to putting our lab in Obedience I after puppy classes, but have decided to seek them elsewhere.

I came across the Tulsa Dog Training Club at the Tulsa Boat Show. I bought a dog training book and Amelia showed me how well-trained Coba is. Coba was already demonstrating a place command, which is where the dog is on an elevated surface waiting patiently for a new command.
